Lemdell has grown from humble beginnings in 1983 to become a leading supplier of fresh mushrooms.
Brothers Frank and Peter Capobianco enlisted brother-in-law Jim Frantzis and began trading in a market stand in A shed at the Sydney Markets near Flemington. Not long after establishing, Lemdell encountered it’s first real opportunity for growth in 1987, when it acquired the established business of C & I Hall from Cess Hall.
This acquisition was important as it allowed Lemdell to move into B Shed. The business flourished and diversified into select niche produce which complimented the business position of mushrooms.
But the LEMDELL story goes back a bit further. Frank commenced his “apprenticeship” as a barrow boy in the old Haymarket in Chinatown in 1965 and was not long after followed by Peter and then Jim.
As the business continues to grow, it remains a tightly managed family run business with Anthony and Carmine, sons of the Capobianco brothers, holding key positions within the organisation.
Lemdell is supported by a loyal and long-serving team including the recently retired Chris Burnett who started with Frank and Peter in 1983, as well as line managers Emanual Psaltis (retired,19 years service), Peter Bucci (11 years) and Craig Hellyer (7 years).
And then there’s Pop. > Pop has been an integral part of the Lemdell organisation starting with Frank in the formative days collecting mushrooms from the various farms.
Pop originally picked up the mushrooms in a 1 tonne truck. These days Lemdell operates a fleet of refrigerated trucks, maintaining our cold chain distribution from grower to customer, ensuring superior and consistent produce quality
Although specialising in mushrooms (the company offers an impressive range of 17 varieties of mushroom) Lemdell offers providores and grocery retailers a wide range of complimentary produce including Asparagus, Snow peas and Sugar snap peas, Gourmet tomatoes, Telegraph cucumbers, French Eschallot, Witloff, Baby Corn, Dutch carrots, Leeks, Beans and Celeriac as well as Strawberries, Kiwi Fruit, Pineapples and Dates.
